فدراسیون فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی ایران امیر قلعهنویی را برای دومینبار به عنوان سرمربی خود انتخاب کرد تا او جانشین کارلوس کیروش پرتغالی شود. در متن پیام فدراسیون فوتبال ایران آمده است: ضمن ارج نهادن به زحمات جامعه مربیان فوتبال کشور و تشکر و پاسداشت خدمات کلیه مربیان تیم ملی در ادوار مختلف به آگاهی جامعه فوتبال و مردم عزیزمان میرساند بر اساس بررسی فنی و کارشناسی و توافق انجام شده، آقای امیر قلعهنویی مربی ارزشمند کشورمان به عنوان سرمربی تیم ملی فوتبال انتخاب شد.
این انتصاب پس از پیروزی ۴ بر صفر گلگهر تیم فعلی قلعهنویی مقابل نفت مسجد سلیمان اعلام شد.
قلعهنویی ۵۹ ساله، از سال ۲۰۰۶ تا ۲۰۰۷ قبل از این که قراردادش با تیم ملی ایران به پایان برسد هدایت ایران را بر عهده داشت و با این تیم به مرحله یک چهارم نهایی جام ملتهای آسیا ۲۰۰۷ رسید که در این مرحله در ضربات پنالتی برابر کره جنوبی شکست خورد.
